Don’t wait too long to have children, you may regret it!Updated on March 06, 2021, Seytoo
26 years old, the fateful age ! The probability of pregnancy, during a cycle, was 50% in women aged 19 to 26, then dropped to 40% between 27 and 34 years and 30% between 35 and 39 years.
The hormonal physiology of women seems to be made to promote relatively early pregnancies. It was already known that the possibility of procreation does not end abruptly at menopause, but follows a slow decline. This decrease in fertility is noticeable after 35 years and especially after 40 years. But according to recent findings, it could even start much earlier: as soon as you are in your thirties. This is what doctors found, after following 782 couples, aged 19 to 40 years for several months. The women were asked to record their morning temperature daily, to determine the date of ovulation, and to specify when the couple had sexual intercourse. The researchers were able to collect information on 5,860 menstrual cycles.
26 years old, the fateful age ! The probability of pregnancy, during a cycle, was 50% in women aged 19 to 26, then dropped to 40% between 27 and 34 years and 30% between 35 and 39 years. A similar phenomenon seems to occur, to a lesser degree, in humans, with a decline in fertility beyond the age of 35.
In contrast, the fertile period does not vary with age. Virtually all of the follow-up reports of pregnancies have taken place within a six-day period around ovulation. But it is during the two days before ovulation that the probability of pregnancy is highest regardless of age.
This decline in fertility, the precise cause of which remains to be determined, is obviously very relative. It only means that women in their 30s will often have to wait a few more months to become pregnant than those in their 20s.
