Arrogant people like to put importance on themselves at the expense of others. Remember that your main goal is to work and earn a living, and not necessarily to make friends.
Work can sometimes be a source of tension, stress and anxiety for many people. It's unfortunate because so many of us spend most of our lives at work. In many cases stress and anxiety at work comes from our colleagues. Those among them who are arrogant can be particularly embarrassing and difficult to pin down. However, your behaviour with them can lead to bad consequences if it gets out of hand. So the tips below should help you get started.
Keep everything in perspective. Remember that your main goal is to work and earn a living, and not necessarily to make friends. However, maintaining cordial and friendly relations with colleagues and collaborators will make your work environment more pleasant. Unfortunately, personality conflicts are not uncommon in business. The other thing to remember is that the attitude of an arrogant coworker has nothing to do with you. So avoid investing yourself emotionally when that arrogance arises.
Keep your distance. Be pushy and always be correct and courteous to your arrogant coworker, but make it clear to them when they cross the line. It means disrespecting you, wasting your time, preventing your team from working, and so on. Lead by example and have a mediating influence. Let him know calmly that his behaviour is inappropriate and hurtful. If he persists, use a firmer tone, and in extreme cases make your decisions if you are his superior, otherwise escalate the information to your supervisor.
Develop confidence and self-esteem. Arrogant people like to put importance on themselves at the expense of others. Show that you have confidence in yourself without being arrogant; express your point of view loud and clear rather than remaining silent. Get involved in the activities and life of the business.
