Protests against police brutality: what is the risk of deploying the Nigerian army?

As the #EndSARS protests gather momentum, the army has warned that they will act against "subversive elements" and "troublemakers" to restore order, after more than a week of protests against police brutality. The army's statements have raised fears of possible deployment of troops to quell the #EndSARS protests which have largely been peaceful. Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has said the training for the new police tactical team, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) has commenced. This is despite the ongoing nationwide protests that led to the dissolution of the dreaded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and rejection of the newly- formed replacement, SWAT.
